Natural Toothpaste - Protect Your Teeth and Freshen Your Breath

Going for natural toothpaste is the best option for those who are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Most chemicals used in traditional kinds of toothpaste are harsh and irritating. If you often feel your gums inflamed or if you bleed while brushing your teeth, those are signs of teeth sensitivity. Even if you often have chapped lips and you can’t really tell why, it could be your toothpaste drying your whole mouth out! In case not every toothpaste is good for your teeth, try looking for the best toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

All-natural ingredients are just as good—if not even better—than traditional ones when it comes to thoroughly cleaning your teeth. We already consume enough chemicals, so don't make your toothpaste a part of the unhealthy process.

Besides, the use of peppermint and spearmint oil extracts in natural toothpaste makes for a fresh flavor and a minty taste that no artificial flavor can match.

We use toothpaste at least 2-3 times a day and we consume it a lot more than we think. That’s why switching to natural toothpaste could be life-changing for you. You won’t believe how much your body absorbs toothpaste and how much damage the chemicals in traditional toothpaste are causing until you make the switch.

[Best For The Teeth Whitening]

4.8/5

If you don’t mind fluoride and enjoy its cavity-prevention capabilities, Hello Naturally is the best for you! Also, the fact that it’s a whitening toothpaste is always welcomed.

Key Features:

  • SLS-free to avoid drying out your mouth
  • Can prevent cavities and whiten teeth
  • Antimicrobial properties to prevent decays
  • Coconut oil and aloe vera to soothe irritations
  • Has tea tree oil that prevents bacterial growth

This toothpaste's ingredient list is quite unique with coconut oil and aloe vera, both enjoying anti-inflammatory properties, making Hello Naturally an excellent natural toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

Also, this toothpaste is gluten-free, vegan, and uses no harsh chemicals like dyes or artificial flavors. You’ll permanently say goodbye to gums and tongue irritation.

Additionally, it has tea tree oil, known for its range of benefits. It can kill harmful bacteria and fungi thanks to its antimicrobial properties. It also can whiten your teeth and prevent decay.

The Hello Naturally offers 4.7 oz in each tube, which I found to be incredibly long-lasting. I lost count of how many weeks one tube lasted even though I brush my teeth at least twice daily.

It’s worth mentioning that this toothpaste is SLS-free. SLS is a chemical used in most skin products, and it can cause some irritation, so having an SLS-free product prevents lips’, gums’, and tongue irritation.

Another thing I have to mention is this toothpaste’s taste. I went in fully expecting a traditional mint flavor, but I was surprised. The taste is quite odd. I wouldn’t really describe it as mint, but it’s still refreshing.

Pros

  • Vegan, cruelty-free
  • Soothes irritations
  • Whitening and cavity-prevention capabilities
  • SLS, gluten, and triclosan-free

Cons

  • Doesn’t have the best taste

For natural tooth care lovers out there, the Jason Powersmile is another excellent toothpaste to battle cavities and provide your teeth with the perfect amount of whitening.

Key Features:

  • Gentle ingredients for those suffering from teeth sensitivity
  • Large tube with 6 oz of product
  • SLS-free to prevent dry lips and mouth
  • Has baking soda for removing plaque effectively
  • Peppermint oil to freshen your breath

Let’s start by looking at what this toothpaste doesn’t have. You can permanently say goodbye to suffering from weird reactions to your toothpaste. This one is so gentle, making it perfect for sensitive teeth and gums. Additionally, it won’t dry out your mouth or lips, thanks to the fact that it’s SLS-free.

Upon testing this toothpaste, my teeth felt cleaner than ever. It has baking soda, helping remove plaque without being too harsh on the teeth, and for whitening, it has bamboo powder and calcium carbonate that leave your teeth feeling clean, fresh, and whiter than ever.

Because sugar is the teeth’s worst enemy, this toothpaste uses grapefruit and perilla seed-based ingredients to damage harmful sugars.

To leave your mouth feeling fresh, this toothpaste uses peppermint oil. Peppermint may not be everyone’s cup of tea because it tastes slightly bitter, but I loved the taste of this toothpaste!

Furthermore, being all-natural automatically means that Jason Powersmile uses no harsh chemicals or sweeteners.

Before making a final purchase, make sure you double-check the bottle because there are two Powersmile toothpaste variants: one has fluoride, and the other doesn't.

If you want your toothpaste tube to last a while, you’ll love that the Jason Powersmile comes with 6 oz. It’s the largest tube on the list!

Pros

  • Vegan, cruelty-free
  • Gentle on the teeth and gums
  • Whitens, removes plaque, and battles cavities
  • Gluten and SLS-free

Cons

  • A little pricey

Tom’s is among the most popular natural toothpaste brands, and their Enamel strength toothpaste is definitely my favorite, and let me tell you why.

Key Features:

  • Anti-inflammatory ingredients to soothe irritations
  • Strengthens your teeth’s enamel
  • Has peppermint oil to freshen your breath
  • Fluoride battles cavities
  • Unique, lingering aftertaste

In case you don’t know, the enamel is the outer part of a tooth that keeps it protected and provides it with its strength. Further strengthening your enamel is critical if you often suffer from decays or weak teeth in general.

Tom's natural toothpaste contains fluoride, which has anti-cavity properties. However, you already know what I have to say about fluoride and its daily consumption, so it's up to you whether you're okay with having it in your toothpaste or not.

However, this vegan toothpaste has no harsh chemicals like flavors or dyes, so it’s suitable for those who suffer from teeth sensitivity.

Taking a deeper look into the ingredients, you'll see that it has calcium carbonate, which cleanses and whitens the teeth and removes plaque. It also has aloe, which has anti-inflammatory properties to keep your lips, gums, and tongue healthy and clean.

Also, this toothpaste has peppermint oil, leaving your breath fresh and providing it with a great taste! The flavor might be too intense; if you don't like when your toothpaste leaves a lingering aftertaste behind, this might not be the one for you.

However, Tom's Enamel Strength toothpaste comes with 4 oz in a tube, which is slightly less than average.

Pros

  • Vegan, cruelty-free
  • Suitable for sensitive teethSLS-free
  • Whitens, fights cavities, and removes plaque
  • SLS-free

Cons

  • Only 4 oz of toothpaste in a tube
  • Strong taste

Davids Natural Toothpaste is another excellent fluoride-free option for those who keep an eye on their fluoride intake. This toothpaste takes environment-friendliness to a new level with its metal tube and included metal roller. You’ll leave no plastic waste behind because the tube is recyclable!

Key Features:

  • Waste-free metal tube to help the environment
  • Creamy formula that’s gentle on the teeth
  • Baking soda removes plaque and whitens teeth
  • Excellent taste that leaves your breath fresh
  • SLS-free so it’s gentle on your mouth and lips

Not only is it fluoride-free, but it also has no SLS, so you can forget all about teeth sensitivity. The formula is also creamy and gentle on the mouth, but leaves your teeth clean.

With ingredients like calcium carbonate and baking soda, this toothpaste can remove plaque, whiten your teeth, and provide you with excellent oral hygiene overall.

The vegan toothpaste is made from mostly organic ingredients that are all cruelty-free. What's more, it's manufactured in the U.S and is EWG (Environment Working Group) verified for having clean ingredients.

Additionally, it has a unique mix of oils, including peppermint, spearmint, and wintergreen oils make for an excellent taste. It’s refreshing and strong enough to wake me up in the morning, but without being overpowering.

Each tube has 5 oz, so one tube of toothpaste will last you quite a while; you don’t need to worry about running out of toothpaste every few days.

However, while the waste-free metal tube is amazing, it’s not the most sturdy option. I found a couple of holes and crack in each tube, which was a bit disappointing.

Pros

  • Zero-waste metal tube
  • EWG verified
  • SLS and fluoride-free
  • Whitens and removes plaque

Cons

  • The metal tube is a little weak

The Weleda Plant-Rich is a three-piece set with Plant Gel, Ratanhia, and Natural Salt toothpaste tubes. All three are fluoride-free and made from all-natural, cruelty-free ingredients.

Key Features:

  • Three kinds of toothpaste in one set
  • Plant Gel tube to prevent inflammations
  • Ratanhia tube has the most refreshing taste
  • Natural salt tube for effective cleansing
  • A total of 7.5 oz of toothpaste

Starting with the Plant Gel one, this toothpaste has chamomilla and flower extract, along with other materials that all have anti-inflammatory properties. It’s the perfect toothpaste for those who suffer from irritated gums. Additionally, it has a refreshing mint flavor!

Moving on to the next tube, the Ratanhia toothpaste has calcium carbonate, a gentle cleanser that cleans your teeth without being too harsh. It also has Ratanhia extract and a mix of peppermint and spearmint oils, which are all soothing ingredients to keep your whole mouth healthy. Besides, they provide the toothpaste with its refreshing taste.

Lastly, the Natural Salt toothpaste is the best one when it comes to cleansing. I love using it after sugary meals to clean my teeth and remove harmful bacteria.

Furthermore, the toothpaste has baking soda, salt, and a mix of root extracts that all work to scrub your teeth clean. Also, the salt adds a unique twist to the minty flavor.

As you see, each of the three tubes has its own unique list of ingredients and offers different results. I recommend using the Natural Salt one before going to bed, the Plant Gel one in the morning, and the Ratanhia for after meals.

While each tube only has 2.5 oz, I can't complain because they amount to 7.5 oz of toothpaste.

Pros

  • A three-piece set
  • Unique, refreshing taste
  • Excellent cleansing capabilities
  • Soothing ingredients

Cons

  • Pricey

What is “Natural” Toothpaste, Really?

A natural tube of toothpaste is one that uses all-natural ingredients, which is quite self-explanatory. But, what does “all-natural ingredients” indicate?

Well, it means that your toothpaste doesn’t have artificial flavors, dyes, or preservatives. The reason you should go for natural toothpaste is the same reason you go for organic food—it’s just better for your teeth, especially if you are using invisible braces, braces for adults or retainers as these orthodontic devices require perfect oral hygiene!

Most natural toothpaste options use ingredients like baking soda to scrub and clean your teeth, a mixture of mint oils for a fresh breath, and fruit or nut extracts.

Ingredients to Avoid in Toothpaste

Why You Should Avoid Fluoride and Triclosan

Fluoride is a controversial ingredient, to say the least. There's no doubt that it's highly beneficial for dental hygiene; it significantly helps prevent decays, which are a significant concern by anyone.

However, because it’s so beneficial, water suppliers started adding it to water, so you’re already intaking a generous amount of fluoride per day, and that’s where concerns arise. Too much of anything can be harmful, so if you’re already consuming enough fluoride in your drinking water, maybe having it in your toothpaste is unnecessary.

Triclosan, on the other hand, is definitely a no-no. It’s widely used in soaps and hygiene-related products because it can fight bacteria. However, as you can guess, fighting bacteria can cause them to start resisting.

While triclosan isn't dangerous, it's not proven to be healthy either. The long-term effects of intaking triclosan are still unclear, which causes many people to steer clear of it.

The Truth About Glycerin

Glycerin is the ingredient that ties everything together. It combines all other ingredients into one consistent texture. Also, it prevents the toothpaste from drying out.

However, it can leave a layer behind. That layer covers the teeth, which in result, causes the accumulation of plaque. In other words, it can be counterproductive when it comes to dental hygiene. Try to avoid glycerin as much as possible.

Final Words

Going for an all-natural toothpaste could be a game-changer for those who suffer from teeth sensitivity. Eliminating harsh chemicals, preservatives, and additional flavors reduce the risk of mouth dryness and gums' irritation.

With that being said, I strongly recommend going for the Auromere Ayurvedic Herbal toothpaste. Not only is it fluoride-free, but it’s also very gentle yet effective. Also, it’ll leave your mouth feeling fresh and clean with its mint flavor.

However, if you don’t mind having fluoride in your toothpaste, the Hello Naturally toothpaste might spark your interest. It’s SLS and gluten-free, and it’s a whitening toothpaste!
