Invisalign Review: How Does It Work
Should you go for an Invisalign or not?
Can anything go wrong while using Invisalign braces and how bad it can be? After using Invisalign in dealing with my minor misalignments, and researching deeply, I can now tell you what Invisalign is.
So, what is Invisalign?
Advertised as quality braces for adults, Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that is used in restoring your confident smile. It can be used to treat mild and moderate situations such as crossbite, underbite, and overbite. You are supposed to wear the trays for 20 hours a day to achieve the best results. There are similar requirements I described in my Byte reviews.
Don’t be worried about maintaining your oral hygiene. The aligners are easily removable when you want to eat or drink anything else but water. After removing them, you can brush your teeth to maintain your oral hygiene. You can check out the amazing signature invisible Smilelove aligners here, or the quality Candid aligners here.
Before wearing back the Invisalign aligners, you should rinse them in cold and running water. Also, scrape any dirt using a toothbrush. This helps to keep bacteria at bay.
Can anything go wrong with Invisalign?
Sometimes you may get some undesired results. These may include gum disease, jaw pain, cavities, among others. To avoid the issues, appreciate the role of your orthodontist in the treatment process. Although dentists are trained in dental matters, orthodontists go through extra training to deal with misalignments.
How does Invisalign work?
First, meet your doctor for assessment and evaluation to decide whether you qualify as a candidate for Invisalign treatment. The doctor will use the iTero Element Scanner to take a 3D digital scan of your teeth. The scan is fast, precise, and helps in mapping out a custom treatment specifically for you.
After taking the 3D impressions, the images are sent to the Invisalign laboratories for evaluation. The images are used in making precision trays that you will use during your treatment process. The number of trays will vary depending on the severity of the patient’s condition.
The aligners are made using a state-of-the-art printing process.
After getting your customized aligners, you can start the journey to the transformation of your smile. It would help if you got the first fitting correct. Your doctor will ensure you get the perfect fit and answer any questions that you might have.
The doctor will also explain what you should expect when you start wearing the aligners. The doctor will also examine your smile to ensure that it meets your standards.
Once you wear the aligners, you’ll schedule face-to-face check-ups with your doctor to evaluate your progress. The checkups should happen after 6 to 8 weeks, and then you pick your next aligners.
You shouldn’t worry about eating with the braces as they are easy to remove when you want to eat. You should also remove them when taking flavored drinks as they may stain the transparent aligners.
After you win back your confident smile, you need to retain it. If you leave the teeth like that, they may go back to their previous position. Invisalign offers you Vivera retainers that help you to keep the smile that you love. The retainers are customized to your satisfaction, and they are sturdier than retainers from other companies. Use the retainer cleaners we reviewed here.
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
How long do you wear Invisalign?
The length depends on the complexity of your situation. Treatment can take up to twelve to eighteen months, but you will start seeing mild results within a week. Depending on whether your situation is mild or complex, you can even complete the treatment in six months.
The length of treatment can also vary due to the age of the client. For instance, teenagers and kids may have faster Invisalign results compared to adults.
In some instances, adults may experience better results than teenagers or kids. The treatment for a teenager or kid will take longer if:
The teenager does not wear the aligners as recommended by the orthodontist
The kid still has growing teeth
If you wish to achieve the best results, you need to attend all your appointments with your doctor. Unlike traditional braces, which involved tightening and adjusting wires, Invisalign braces only involve evaluating the treatment progress.
The appointments are fast and easy, and the doctor wants to assess whether the results that the patient desires are being achieved.
If you don’t comply with the recommended treatment plan, you may experience a delay in your treatment and even undergo additional Invisalign cost. The orthodontist may have to restart your treatment or create new trays for you to achieve the best results.
Does Invisalign results differ depending on how long you wear the aligners? For the aligners to be effective, you should have them for as long as possible. Essentially, you should wear braces between 20 to 22 hours.
You can remove the aligners temporarily when you want to eat or brush your teeth. Although you have the freedom of efficiently removing them, please don’t overdo it. Each Invisalign aligner should be worn for about two weeks. Ideally, you should wear the aligners until the teeth have a comfortable fit or are relatively loose.
If there is a comfortable fit within the two weeks, you can move on to the next set of aligners. If not, you need to have them for a more extended period.
Note, your treatment can’t progress if you don’t have your aligners on. As such, you shouldn’t have them off for an extended period. The less you wear them, the longer your treatment will take.
How Do I Know Invisalign Is Working?
Before I could use Invisalign, I wanted to be sure that investing in Invisalign would produce the desired results. I combed the internet for all available information and reviews. I looked at both positive and negative reviews and what I could learn.
So, does Invisalign work?
If the Invisalign invisible aligners form a comfortable fit within the recommended time, it is an indication that the aligners are working.
You also know that the aligners are working if your teeth continue tracking. If there is a gap between the tray and the teeth, it shows that some teeth aren’t shifting as expected. As you continue to switch trays, the problem with the gap will grow bigger.
Sometimes, the orthodontist may recommend the use of the previous tray until the tooth shifts as expected. Other times, he/she will recommend that you continue with the future trays and solve the problem with refinement trays.
The gap results when you don’t wear your trays properly, or the tooth is just stubborn.
It is better to choose an orthodontist for your treatment instead of a general dentist. An orthodontist is specialized in dealing with such challenges. He/she will come up with the best solution as you continue with treatment.
Does Invisalign Hurt?
Before you can enter into treatment, it would help if you understood what to expect. Your orthodontist or dentist may not mention some of these things, and you will experience them as you continue with treatment.
The severity of the treatment differs from one patient to another. For some. They may have pains throughout the treatment process, while for others, they’ll experience pain when they use some trays.
Unfortunately, there is no way for you to tell whether you will experience pains or not. Thus, as you decide to take up the treatment, just that pain is a possibility.
Sometimes, the pain may not be there when they have the trays on but maybe severe when removing them. You may also find it hard to chew during the first few days, but as you continue and the teeth shifting becomes more subtle, the pain becomes less severe.
As you continue with the treatment, the pain lessens, and you can even chew hard foods.
Note, it is not a must for you to experience severe pains during the treatment. For some people, you may just experience some discomfort for some time, and you are done.
You may also experience some mild Invisalign side effects such as a lisp during speech, bad breath, allergies, biting inside your cheek.
Is Invisalign Noticeable
Are you a face-to-face businessman, or a teenager who is conscious about their image? Apart from being concerned about how it works and effectiveness, people also mind about its discreteness.
If there is a reason that has made braces popular over traditional braces, it is their discreteness. As such, before deciding to use Invisalign or braces, it would help if you know how discreet Invisalign is. You don’t want people to see the Invisalign attachments and wires in your mouth as you talk and smile.
So, does Invisalign have the best invisible braces? No, Invisalign braces are discreet, but they are not entirely invisible. Other people will notice them as you laugh or talk.
They are noticeable because they are clear and shiny, unlike natural teeth that are matte. Therefore, they may not be the best choice if you are conscious of people knowing about your journey to restoring your smile.
But, they are not as conspicuous as the traditional braces with the wires and attachments. Only someone with a keen and curious eye will notice them.
Eating with Invisalign
One thing I found out which the orthodontist or dentist may not tell you is that you will spend a portion of your day in the bathroom. You can have the Invisalign braces on, especially if you are drinking water.
But, you must remove them if you don’t want them damaged or stained when it comes to eating and drinking flavored drinks.
As such, you will be removing them when having breakfast, lunch, and dinner. After you remove them, you cannot have them back without rinsing to keep bacteria at bay. Also, you have to brush your teeth before wearing them back.
That means if you are a good cook, you will cook your delicious meal without tasting it. You cannot tell how much salt or spices you need to add. Otherwise, you would have to keep removing the braces and putting them back.
Removing and taking back the aligners is not the easiest for some people as it can be painful or uncomfortable. Not forgetting you have to beat the 20 to 22 hours rule of having the aligners on.
Therefore, you have to balance between enjoying your favorite meal or drink and having the braces on for the recommended time to achieve the best results.
The inconvenience and pain of having to remove and wear the aligners again may put you on an Invisalign diet. It can be a worthwhile addition to your weight loss journey.
When you have the invisible braces on, you will rarely snack. You will find yourself starving in parties because of the inconvenience of removing, cleaning, and wearing back the aligners. You may even choose to skip some meals instead of having three meals per day.
Thus, you may find yourself right on the track of your weight loss journey as you will find yourself doing away with sugar a lot.
How to Clean Invisalign
As mentioned earlier, it is vital to maintain the rule of having the aligners for at least 22 hours a day to achieve the best results. But equally important is learning how to keep your aligners and teeth clean. Oral hygiene is essential in dealing with bacteria that may cause cavities and other dental issues.
Invisalign invisible aligners should be cleaned daily to ensure a perfect treatment process.
Should you come up with a routine for cleaning the aligners? Here is a suggestion for such a routine.
When you wake up, clean both your teeth and the aligners. There is a lot of possibility for bacteria buildup when you are sleeping. If you wish to minimize the buildup, remove your aligners, and clean them and your teeth before sleeping.
Each time you remove the tray, make sure to rinse them using cold water. Don’t use hot water as it may bend them or warp the trays. Also, don’t leave your tray out in the open. Instead, have your case with you so that you can keep them in it.
After removing the trays while eating, ensure you brush and floss before having them back on. If you don’t brush and floss, you are likely to trap food particles, which puts you at risk of cavities and other dental problems like bad breath.
Soak your trays daily in denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals. Don’t soak them in hot water or mouthwash as they can damage the trays. After soaking the trays, use a toothbrush to get rid of stuck food particles.
Don’t use toothpaste in cleaning the aligners. This is a mistake that many people do not know. Toothpaste can discolor or darken the trays making them more noticeable.
Additionally, avoid using scented and colored soaps as they can stain the trays. The scented soaps may also leave a residual taste, which may not be ideal as you’ll be having the trays for an extended period.
After going through the Invisalign treatment, you’ll have your confident smile back. The cost for Invisalign treatment is substantial in terms of time, money, and energy. As such, it is logical that you should strive to retain the smile.
If you leave the teeth like that, there is a possibility they will drift back to their former positions. To avoid this, the orthodontist will provide you with a retainer after you are through with treatment. You should have the retainer for at least 22 hours a day for some weeks or months. After that, you’ll start wearing them at night.
There is a noticeable difference in your smile before and after Invisalign treatment. Therefore, it is vital that you don’t let the pains and struggles go to waste by not wearing retainers.
Additionally, you should maintain high standards of hygiene for the retainers. Just like the trays, retainers require a lot of care when cleaning them. Otherwise, they may lead to more dental issues.
Use the recommended products when you want to clean your retainers. There are a lot of dependable products in the market, which include powder or tablets. You can also use the wipe form solutions, which are ideal for you, especially when traveling.
Is Invisalign Worth It
There is a lot of cost involved in the treatment, including money, time, and a few sacrifices. It will therefore help to know if Invisalign is worth all the trouble.
According to my experience, I decided to use Invisalign treatment to deal with my minor teeth misalignments. I had read not one Invisalign review, but many of them, and I was convinced it offers what I required.
After going through the treatment process, I can confirm that Invisalign is worth it. Though it came with many struggles, observing a strict routine, and making sacrifices, I can now see the results. My teeth are now straight, and I can enjoy a confident smile.
Invisalign invisible aligners are also an excellent option when you want results in months. Depending on your situation's complexity, you can complete your treatment in six months, provided you follow all the guidelines.
Unlike other aligner companies that conduct remote monitoring of your treatment progress, Invisalign still uses physical visitation. The visits are easy and fast, and you shouldn’t worry about wasting the whole day waiting for a doctor.
The orthodontist evaluates your progress and may recommend adjustments that will help in achieving the desired results.
Invisalign Versus Braces
Which one is the better option between Invisalign and traditional braces?
As a result of trusting Invisalign before and after treatment, I can now enjoy a bright smile. The choice between Invisalign and braces will depend on your preferences and the results you want.
If you are conscious of your image and want results in months, you can go for Invisalign. However, it may not move some stubborn teeth to straighten like the others.
On the other hand, braces can move even the most stubborn teeth. But, they are conspicuous for all to see. Your orthodontist will advise you on the best choice depending on your condition.
If you wish to use Invisalign, you should look for honest Invisalign reviews to help you make an informed decision. Here, I have outlined my experience, how it works, and what you should expect.
